Sandal Season

Sandal Season is Here: Don’t Let Toenail Fungus Get in the Way

NS News FungusFrom our experience, toenail fungus can be very physically & emotionally frustrating. With Spring in full swing and the Summer months right around the corner, or as we here at Afterglow Medical Aesthetics & Skin Care like to call it, “Sandal Season,” now is good time to start considering treatment.

Toenail fungus, or onychomycosis, is a fungal infection that has developed on the toenails or fingernails. Most commonly found in toenails, affecting just one or all 20 nails, it results in the nail becoming more discolored, dense, and distorted. It is important to seek treatment as it can eventually result in the nail to chip and/or become so thick that it makes wearing shoes uncomfortable and even painful.

How do you know if you have toenail fungus? Here are some indicators…

  • Brittleness
  • Change in nail shape
  • Crumbling of the outside edges of the nail
  • Debris trapped under the nail
  • Loosening or lifting up of the nail
  • Thickening of the nail
  • White or yellow streaks on the side of the nail
  • Pus & redness is present around or underneath the nail

Whilst there are various treatments available from oral drugs, topical drugs and home remedies, Afterglow Skin Care is an advocate of laser therapy to treat toenail fungus. Laser therapy is a non-chemical method of treating nail fungus safely and effectively. Using the gold standard in toenail fungus laser therapy, Sciton ClearSense, we are able to safely target the area. The severity of the toenail fungus will determine the amount of treatments necessary.

Nail Fungus is not pretty!

A study conducted by a Stanford University Dermatolgist, has shown that the Nd Yag laser clears up various fungal infections in both toenail and fingernail beds.

Current topical treatments are often unable to penetrate the nail to effectively treat the fungus; and oral therapies only clear up fungus in 35 to 50% of patients.

Lasers work by inhibiting fungal growth with heat as well as the infrared laser.

Dr. Ebrahim is pleased to offer this treatment at Afterglow Medical Aesthetics.

With this treatment there is no downtime and typical treatment protocol is three treatments one month apart.

Call Afterglow for your complimentary consultation today, and make that step towards attractive nails.

Do you suffer from split nails?

Some patients complain about unhealthy nails, which is really an oxymoron since finger nails are dead.  However, nails resist trauma and splitting when they are well hydrated,  Other tips for healthy nails are:  keep them short, don’t type with the nail tip, wear gloves whenever using strong cleaners and solvents and drink lots of water

Lasers: When 1+1+1 = a Perfect 10!

When you come to Afterglow, we have 3 different types of lasers that can give you smoother and more even skin.  Factional lasers, the latest in skin resurfacing, have transformed our approach to creating smoother, more even toned skin.  By creating microscopic holes in the skin, these lasers produce results that are greater than their minimally invasive nature would suggest.  While many practices have 1 fractional laser, Afterglow has 3 – each serving a unique role in helping us create a custom regimen for our clients.  We have a laser that is effective in helping to eliminate acne scars, another that helps with fine lines and wrinkles, and a slightly more aggressive laser for deeper lines and more extensive sun damage.  These fractional lasers can be used on the neck, chest and hands to improve skin texture and colour.

If you want skin that is smooth and lustrous, do the math and call Afterglow to learn how our lasers can  help you.

Dermal Rolling – a new treatment for Stretch Marks

Also referred to as skin needling, Dermal Rolling is used for collagen channeling for natural collagen induction.

The principal behind this therapy is simple:  when applied to the skin, under a local or topical anaesthetic, channels are created deep into the dermis of the skin.

These channels cause keratinocytes and fibroblasts to produce numerous growth factors which induce the growth of collagen – with no damage to the epidermis!

Dermal Rolling is used to soften fine lines, tighten skin, restore elasticity plus reduce the appearance of scarring, pigmentation marks and stretch marks.

The procedure is safe, entirely natural with a short healing period of approximately 5 days.  No sun sensitivity is induced and it can be used on laser resurfaced skin.  Another advantage to this treatment is the areas it can be used on:  face, neck and body!

So get Rolling and call Afterglow for your complimentary consultation.

Aging Hands

Aging Hands

Aging Hands

Is it true that you can always tell a woman’s age by her hands? Thanks to modern tools and techniques, this old adage is no longer the case. While your hands will never again look as young as when you were in your 20s, they can look a lot better— and more youthful — with the anti-aging treatments available at Afterglow.

Let’s take a look at what makes hands appear old: As our hormones wane in middle age, the skin and its underlying fat undergoes changes. On the face, arms and hands the skin becomes noticeably thinner, and much of the underlying fat is lost. These changes mean the skin no longer drapes tautly over the fat, and becomes looser and more wrinkled in appearance. With thinner skin and less fat, the underlying structures – bones, tendons and veins – become more obvious.

Another common change is the development of age spots (solar lentigines).

Many women respond to the aging of their hands by having the veins injected, and using makeup or a skin bleaching agent to temporarily disguise the age spots. These methods are usually ineffective as other veins of the hand tend to grow larger to ensure continuity of blood flow, and the age spots return as soon as the bleaching treatments are discontinued, or makeup worn off.

A better solution is to take advantage of our anti-aging program for hands, which will permanently remove existing age spots, and fill in the spaces between the bones, so that the bones and veins lose their prominence. We also recommend the use of retinoic acid to thicken the skin and restore some of the collagen that has been lost over time. (Using retinoic acid along with a sunscreen every day is also a good preventive measure for younger hands, or to help maintain a new, more youthful look.)

To fill in the spaces between the bones of the hands, Dr. Ebrahim carefully injects Radiesse dermal filler under the skin. Approximately one syringe is used per hand, and the results can last for over a year, making this treatment very cost-effective. The two pictures above are the before and after images of hands that have undergone treatment with Radiesse. Note the veins, tendons and bones are considerably less noticeable. The tiny calcium-based microspheres of Radiesse form a “scaffold” to support and stimulate the growth of your own collagen. (We do not recommend fat injection as experience has shown the fat is broken down and resorbed by the body in as little as a couple of months.)

Age spots are treated with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) using Sciton BBL broadband light, which addresses melanin pigmentation. This light treatment also helps to regenerate collagen for a healthier, tauter and more youthful skin.

After your treatments, be sure to protect your younger-looking hands with sunscreen every day and a nightly application of a retinoic acid product. (Please ask Dr. Ebrahim for advice on the best product for your specific needs.)

The ProFractional Laser

The ProFractional Laser

The ProFractional Laser

Do you suffer from any of the following skin conditions?

  • Acne scars
  • Surgical scars
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Melasma (mask of pregnancy)
  • Sunspots/sun damage
  • Crepey skin on face/neck
  • Poor tone and texture
  • Enlarged pores
  • Stretch marks

If so, you may be interested in treatment with our new ProFractional laser—the newest technology for skin resurfacing. Skin resurfacing with the ProFractional laser benefits all skin types and provides long-lasting results. ProFractional uses a laser microbeam to treat thousands of pinpoint areas of your skin. Since only a fraction of the skin is directly treated with the laser, healing time is quick and downtime is short.

How does the ProFractional laser benefit your skin? By deliberately inducing micro-channels of controlled damage, the laser “tells” the skin to repair itself by building new collagen. This new collagen smoothes out wrinkles, tautens crepiness and fills in the pits and scars associated with acne. The treatment also breaks down the pigmentation that gives rise to melasma, sunspots and freckles.
If you are looking for younger looking skin, or to improve scars, wrinkles, or sun damage in a comfortable treatment with a fast recovery, then you may be an ideal candidate for ProFractional treatment.

How many ProFractional treatments will you need?

ProFractional is a fast, comfortable procedure that normally takes 15-30 minutes depending on the condition and the size of the area treated. A numbing cream may be applied in advance to aid in comfort during the procedure. ProFractional is typically done in a series of 1-4 treatments, spaced 3-6 weeks apart, depending on your needs. Afterglow will personalize a treatment plan based on the level of improvement desired and may recommend that you combine ProFractional with a MicroLaser Peel or other effective aesthetic procedures to further enhance your treatment results.
