The new generation of 100% hyaluronic acid (HA)-based wrinkle filling products, juvederm and teosyal, is highly biocompatible and slowly absorbed.
What is hyaluronic acid?
Naturally present in the skin, HA is found in most tissues of the human body such as skin and cartilage. The average adult human body contains 7 to 8 g of HA, approximately half of which is found in the skin, where it plays a vital role in maintaining normal skin structure and function.
HA is lost from the skin over time as a result of both internal (age, sex, estrogen status) and external (sun exposure, wind, medication) factors. There is also a decrease in the production of HA and the redistribution of HA from the epidermis to the dermis.
How it the liquid facelift works
The right filler or a combination of fillers has three different effects:
- Plump, fill and smooth wrinkles.
- Lift and replace volume, enhancing the cheekbones and redefining the facial contours.
- Rehydrate the skin tissues deep down. HA is an effective moisturizing agent and is capable of absorbing 1,000 times its weight in water.
The liquid facelift procedure
Topical or injectable anaesthesia is used first to numb the treatment area. In the mid-face, filler is injected at varying depths within or beneath the skin to instantly fill the space and redefine the facial contours. Nasolabial folds, perioral wrinkles, marionette lines, smile lines, frown lines and lips can be treated as well.
Potential side effects
Side effects are mild in nature. The most common side effects include temporary redness, swelling and bruising that may last up to 3 to 5 days.
Immediate and long-lasting results up to 6 months for lines and folds, and 1 to 2 years for the mid-face have been achieved in clinical studies.
