Love Your Lips
How to keep your lips looking their best
Make the most of what nature gave you by keeping your lips smooth so fine lines are diminished and lip color stays put. Luscious lips look great if your lips are in peak condition from the start.
Chapped lips
Chapping is due to dehydration and leaves lips looking thinner. What you really need are emollients to rehydrate the parched areas. A wax based balm or a moisture rich lipstick will not only protect your lips but also act as physical blocking agents to the sun year round.
Splitting Lips
If your lip skin is already broken, barrier lip products alone will not help. The skin needs exfoliation, moisture and then a protective balm with UV filters. In the morning, apply lip balm and use it as often as you can throughout the day. Do not lick your lips or pick any dead skin.
Irregular colour
A great way to disguise uneven lip color is by using a neutral lip liner and foundation to line and fill in the lip before applying balm or lipstick. Lip skin is very thin and susceptible to ultraviolet damage. Always carry a lip balm with ultraviolet filters.
Uneven lip line
An uneven lip line may be corrected with a little artistry.
When one side of the mouth is fuller than the other, even things out by lining the fuller side of the mouth first, then use the pencil to build up the lip line on the other side. After lining the lips, fill in with lipstick using the lip brush. Slightly crooked mouths can be actually quite seductive. Start with a new lining pencil and with a few extra strokes, gently embellish the area that needs to be evened out. Lighter shades will make the mouth look bigger and darker shades will make it seem to recede.
Lipstick bleed
Use a lip pencil that is not too creamy or greasy to outline the mouth. Then use a lip primer. Its waxy texture helps lipstick adhere. Be careful what type of lipstick you use. Darker pigments like deep red or wine bleed the most as do very creamy or glossy formulas. Keep color where it belongs by blotting some powder or foundation before adding color to reduce feathering.
Lip Tips
Start with a primer that fills in lines and deflect lines to minimize the look of lines, pores and wrinkles around the mouth.
To give lips staying power, use a bit of foundation before applying color.
Always use a liner that matches your lip color. Play up the sensuous curves of your mouth by drawing slightly over the natural lip line.
If you want your lipstick to last, use pencil first as a base, then outline and color in your lips with pencil and apply lipstick to gloss over.
Cheat a little by drawing slightly above the lip liner but do not add color to the highlighted area. Use a lip brush for more precision to fill in inside the lines. Apply lip color evenly in a gentle sweep with minimal pressure.
Add a touch of shimmery gloss to reflect the light and give a fuller appearance.
Use more gloss on the middle of the bottom lip to accentuate your sultry pout. Try a metallic gloss to reflect light.
If your lipstick tends to bleed, go for matte lipsticks that last longer than creamier formulas. After applying, blot then brush translucent powder gently over lips to set the color.
