Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) for Acne
PDT is an exiting new treatment that both medical and cosmetic patients are enjoying today for the treatment of all types of acne. The results are remarkable. Patients will experience textural improvement, pore minimization, reduction in size and activity of sebaceous glands and reduction of bacteria in the hair follicles.
The Procedure
The procedure consists of applying a solution of 20% ALA (aminolevulanic acid) directly onto the skin to targeted lesions. A light or laser source is then used to activate the solution and the targeted cells are destroyed.
Are the treatments painful?
The procedure is well tolerated and takes less than an hour to perform. Redness, peeling and flaking, and/or tightness of the skin are common and can last from 3-4 days up to 1 week. Patients are advised to avoid sun exposure for up to 48 hours post procedure since the ALA solution is still active.
Advantages of other treatments
Although Accutane still remains the gold standard for the treatment of moderate to severe acne, it has fairly toxic side effects. These include redness and swelling sore mouth and tongue and hair loss which can be permanent in about 3% of individuals. Systemic side effects include its potential for teratogenicity, depression and suicide. These side effects have made some parents unwilling to allow their teenagers to take this medication.
Levulan is a safe and viable treatment option for patients with acne. It is a great alternative for those who have failed with Accutane or those who are non compliant with treatment. It is simple, effective and has minimal side effects.
The response time is quick and non invasive with excellent cosmetic outcomes.
How many treatments will I require?
While initial results may be seen as early as the first session, some patients require a series of three sessions to see significant results. However, it really depends on the patient and the severity of the skin condition being treated.
How successful is it?
Clinical results have been very encouraging with about an 80% success rate. After 2-3 treatments most patients are acne free or have a significant improvement in their acne for 6 months to one year. Photodynamic Therapy is a treatment, not a cure.
How much does treatment cost?
How much will you be willing to pay to transform your appearance? Cost of treatment will vary depending upon what areas are being treated and the number of treatments that you will require. On average cost varies from $290 - $400 per treatment.
