Photodynamic Therapy
With Blu-U and Levulan
| Treatment for: |
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) with Blue-U is used for a variety of purposes, including suspected skin cancers, sun spots and acne. The procedure has two components: a drug called levulan ALA and a light source. Levulan ALA is applied topically (directly on the skin) on the affected areas. The powerful Blu-U light source or laser is then used to activate the levulan ALA, eliminating the targeted cells.
Following the procedure, you need to protect treated lesions from the sun with a wide-brimmed hat or alternative light-opaque covering. Sunscreen will not protect against photosensitivity reactions to visible light, hence, you should stay away from sunlight for 24 hours.
The treatment is painless. Mild to moderate redness, similar to mild sunburn, may be experienced for a few days as well as possible slight flaking of the skin.
While initial results may be seen as early as the first session, you may require a series of 3 to 5 sessions to see significant results. Much depends on the severity of the skin condition. PDT is a treatment, not a cure. Most results will last 1 to 2 years, depending on lifestyle choices.
