Botox cosmetic belongs to a class of drugs called botulinum toxins (BTX), which derive from the bacterium clostridium botulinum. This is a very similar source of many common medicines, such as penicillin and other antibiotics, which derive from mould.
Botox for lines and wrinkles
Botox cosmetic has been used for cosmetic purposes for over 10 years and is the only BTX approved for cosmetic use in North America. Over 80% of study participants reported an improvement in their frown lines a week after injection; after 30 days, patients rated their frown lines much improved or non-existent. Improvements were still reported up to 4 months later.
One 10- to 15-minute treatment usually takes effect after several days and keeps your face more relaxed looking for 3 to 4 months. If you choose not to have further botox treatments, your lines will eventually return to pre-treatment levels.
Are there any side effects?
In the amounts used for the treatment of frown lines, side effects -- if they do occur -- are usually temporary and localized to the area of injection. Possible side effects that may temporally occur within the first week following injection: localized tenderness, bruising and headaches. Ptosis, which causes the brow or an eyelid to droop, can occur but is rare, especially in the hands of an experienced doctor.
Botox to relieve excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
By blocking the release of acetylcholine, which activates the sweat glands, botox injections can relieve excessive sweating. Previous treatments were often ineffective and short-acting, or were associated with significant risks.
Studies have shown that 80% to 90% of patients respond with one treatment. Botox injections can improve quality of life and decrease body odour for up to 7 months. A long-term study has shown that side effects are minimal.
