When it comes to getting major results with minor downtime, the IPL photofacial has a lot to offer. This light-based treatment is one of the most powerful ways to even skin pigmentation and reduce redness, dark spots, and discoloration. Combine these effects with little to no downtime, and you’ll see why the IPL photofacial is among our Vancouver-area medi-spas’ most popular treatments.
In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at a few reasons the IPL photofacial is such a worthwhile treatment for anyone looking to achieve more evenly pigmented skin.
It reduces pigmentation concerns.
IPL (intense pulsed light) therapy is very effective when it comes to evening out pigmentation. Here’s how it works: One of our skilled team members (either Tara Nemeth or Terry Almeida) uses a hand-held device to deliver powerful pulses of light to your skin, where it’s absorbed by melanin and blood vessels. This will break down excess pigmentation and cause your body to naturally lift it out of the skin. The treatment is ideal for men and women looking to reduce:
- Age spots
- Brown patches
It minimizes persistent redness.
Redness is one of the most common concerns people choose to treat with an IPL photofacial. Rosacea and broken blood vessels can be difficult to conceal or treat with other approaches, but IPL therapy can provide a welcome solution.
The treatment is quick.
Sessions typically only take about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on which area you’re looking to treat. You won’t need to do much prep other than avoiding excessive sun exposure and wearing plenty of SPF for 2 weeks ahead of your appointment. (Curious about laser skin treatment prep? Learn more in this previous blog post.)
During the session, you may feel a series of slight pinpricks or pinches, though most people find the treatment so comfortable they don’t need any anesthetic.
There’s little to no downtime required.
Other than some minor redness that typically quickly resolves, you can return to your daily activities soon after your session. Continuing diligent sunscreen use is a must during this time, because the intense light can make your skin sensitive to sun exposure.
The first few days after your appointment, you may notice your dark spots darkening even more. This is normal. The pigment should fade away after a few days.
Results are long-lasting.
Results can last for many years after a full series of treatments, which typically involves 3 to 5 sessions spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart. Many people choose to refresh their results about once a year so they can keep enjoying their clearest, most evenly pigmented skin.
