Since the sun’s ultraviolet rays can be damaging to the skin, it is important to monitor any skin abnormalities in the event that cancer is developing. At Afterglow Physician Directed Medical Aesthetics, our team is experienced in diagnosing conditions like actinic keratosis (AK), which is a common precancerous skin growth. Although AK does not always lead to skin cancer, the condition should be treated with the goal of preventing further harm from occurring.
Our doctors offer the advanced solution of Picato® gel for those suffering from AK lesions. This medical ointment is approved by the FDA to treat actinic keratosis, and it is the first of its kind to resolve the issue in as few as two or three days.
If you think you may be suffering from AK, please contact our office to schedule a consultation so our professionals can evaluate your needs and help you treat these potentially harmful growths.
What are the benefits of Picato® gel?
Since it is not possible to identify whether AK will lead to skin cancer in the future, treatment of the problem is crucial. Picato® gel is a highly advantageous treatment option that we are pleased to offer our patients. Benefits include:
- Fast-acting formula
- Simple treatment regimen
- Reduction, if not complete clearance, of AKs
- Lower risk of developing skin cancer
What are the most commonly treated areas?
Since AKs typically develop on areas that are regularly exposed to the sun, such as the face, scalp, lips, and back of the hands, Picato® gel can be used on any of these areas.
Does it hurt?
The application of Picato® gel generally involves minimal discomfort. It is normal to experience such side effects as red, flaky, and slightly swollen skin areas, but these are simply signs that the gel is working. More rare, the sensations of pain and itching may be experienced. If these persist beyond two weeks, please contact us.
What does the treatment entail?
Picato® gel comes in two strengths: 0.015% and 0.05%. If you have an AK lesion on your face or scalp, you will be prescribed a dose of 0.015% and instructed to apply the gel once a day, three days in a row. Should you suffer from AKs on your trunk or extremities, you will need to apply the gel of 0.05% strength once a day for two days.
