What Is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a type of neuromodulator, which is designed to halt excess muscle movement in the targeted area. Wrinkles are often formed in regions where the underlying muscles may be overactive and contributing to these common signs of aging. BOTOX® Cosmetic temporarily halts this reaction, creating a smoother appearance with fewer creases.
What Are the Benefits of BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and XEOMIN® can serve as effective treatments to enhance areas under the eyes, above the lips, around the corners of the mouth, and even in the jawline regions of the face. Dr. Ebrahim will discuss all of the potential benefits these injectable solutions can provide during your initial consultation. Here are just a few of the advantages associated with BOTOX® Cosmetic or XEOMIN® treatment:
- Smooths Out Wrinkles, Fine Lines, and Other Signs of Age and Stress
- Typically results in a more refreshed and youthful appearance
- No surgery is required
- There is typically no recovery period or downtime necessary after the procedure
- The treatment is designed for results that look natural without a “frozen” appearance
- A topical anesthetic can be administered to minimize discomfort during treatment
- The treatment is often very quick – you can have it performed over your lunch hour!
Dysport® Vs. BOTOX® Cosmetic Vs. XEOMIN®
There are not many significant differences between BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and XEOMIN® – in fact, they have very similar purposes. They are all composed of a diluted form of botulinum toxin type A, and they can be used to temporarily reduce the appearance of fine lines and other signs of facial aging. BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and XEOMIN® are injectable solutions directed at specific areas of the face. They work by temporarily preventing muscles in the targeted areas from contracting. It is this very muscle contraction that often causes wrinkles to form along the skin. When the muscles can no longer contract, the skin becomes smoother and more vibrant.
How Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Work?
A type of neuromodulator, BOTOX® Cosmetic works by blocking signals from nerves to the targeted muscle groups. As a result, the affected muscles can no longer contract, allowing wrinkles to soften and become smoother, thus providing a more youthful appearance.
Is BOTOX® Cosmetic Safe?
BOTOX® Cosmetic has been safely used as a therapeutic treatment for fine lines and wrinkles, hyperhidrosis (sweating), and even migraines for decades. The most important factor in regard to safety is choosing a highly qualified and experienced injector to perform the procedure. Dr. Ebrahim is extensively skilled in determining the appropriate dosage for your individual needs and goals, giving you confidence in your treatment plan.
How Is the BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment Performed?
One of the many advantages of treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, or XEOMIN® is that the procedure is typically simple and quick. The solution is injected into the areas targeted for treatment with a very fine needle. The targeted areas can be numbed before the injections to alleviate discomfort. The entire procedure usually lasts between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the size and number of the treatment areas.
Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Hurt?
With local anesthetic applied to the targeted areas, any discomfort during treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, or XEOMIN® should be greatly minimized. Your care and comfort are our highest priorities, and we will work with you to find an approach the maximizes your experience while minimizing discomfort.
Are There Any Side Effects from BOTOX® Cosmetic?
The results of these treatments are typically most noticeable about four or five days after the initial procedure. During this time, you may experience some mild bruising and swelling around the injection sites; however, these effects should fade rather quickly. Most patients are able to return to normal daily activities immediately following the procedure.
How Long Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Last?
The results usually last between three and five months, although continued use may allow some patients to see longer-lasting effects over time. If you love the way you look, the benefits can be maintained for much longer periods with occasional follow-up treatments.
How Much Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Cost?
The price of BOTOX® Cosmetic will depend on several factors, most significantly how much of the formula is needed to address your concerns. If you are treating several areas, you are more likely to need a larger dosage. Dr. Ebrahim and our medical team will discuss the estimated cost of your treatment plan prior to the procedure so you can be well-informed about every step. Currently, at our practice, BOTOX® Cosmetic costs $11 per unit, and we will let you know approximately how much you should need during your evaluation.
BOTOX® for Excessive Sweating
In addition to softening signs of aging, BOTOX® Cosmetic can be used to minimize excessive sweating, a condition known as hyperhidrosis. You can learn more about this common concern and how BOTOX® Cosmetic can help on our hyperhidrosis page.
Are There Any BOTOX® Cosmetic Alternatives?
In addition to BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and XEOMIN®, Afterglow offers a full array of injectable options and non-surgical skin care treatments, including JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, Laser Skin Resurfacing, Ultherapy®, and many others. These treatments can serve as an alternative to BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and XEOMIN®, or as a complement to one of those effective procedures for a more comprehensive aesthetic makeover.
