Dermal Fillers

Are you interested in facial rejuvenation but do not wish to endure the recovery and downtime that often accompanies surgery? The good news is, surgical cosmetic enhancement is not always necessary to treat many common signs of aging!

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Comprised of substances found naturally in the body, temporary dermal fillers can be injected just below the skin’s surface to add volume, enhance facial contour, and produce a smoother, more youthful-looking appearance. At Afterglow Physician Directed Medical Aesthetics, our experienced family doctor, Shehla Ebrahim, MD, offers JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, and RADIESSE® to non-surgically improve the appearance of various facial aging concerns. Carefully administered in our office by Dr. Ebrahim, injectable treatments can often be completed in under an hour with little to no discomfort or downtime, and results are generally immediate and relatively long-lasting.

Which Signs of Aging Can Be Treated with Dermal Fillers?

  • Smile lines (nasolabial folds)
  • Marionette lines
  • Vertical lip lines
  • Worry and frown lines
  • Smoker’s lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Double chins

Dermal Fillers Vs. BOTOX® Cosmetic

While both dermal fillers and BOTOX Cosmetic can be used to soften the appearance of wrinkles, and both are types of cosmetic injectables, the way they achieve the intended effect is different. The mechanism behind BOTOX Cosmetic is reduction of muscle activity, while dermal fillers plump the treated area and add volume. In some cases one or the other injectable will better serve your needs. It may be that BOTOX Cosmetic maximizes your benefits in one area and a dermal filler provides the best result in another. We will discuss your goals and tailor a program to suit you.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

Depending on the number of areas you wish to address, treatment typically takes about 30 minutes to an hour to complete. In fact, many people receive injectables fillers on their lunch break.

Does it Hurt?

Discomfort during treatment is minimal to moderate, and some fillers – such as JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC – are formulated with a local anesthetic called lidocaine for enhanced comfort.

Are There Any Side Effects from Dermal Fillers?

Following treatment, some bruising and/or swelling may occur, but these side effects should dissipate shortly and normal activities can often be resumed immediately.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

Results will generally appear instantaneously with treatment. Depending on the specific filler, as well as the particular area of concern, the effects of injectable treatments will often last anywhere from six months to a year.

Will I Need Additional Dermal Filler Treatments?

Occasional touch-up treatments (about every six to twelve months) will generally be necessary to maintain optimal results; however, this may vary on a case by case basis.

In addition to dermal fillers, our practice offers a number of other cosmetic injectables and non-surgical skin rejuvenation procedures that can help you achieve a more youthful, refreshed appearance. Included among these treatment options are BOTOX® Cosmetic and Xeomin®, laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels, and more.

How Much Do Dermal Fillers Cost?

Each dermal filler brand is priced differently, and the cost of your treatment plan will depend on which fillers you use and how much is needed to achieve the desired outcome. We will review your customized program before beginning so that you are well-informed about the anticipated expense. Generally speaking, fillers typically cost around $700 per vial, with some formulas coming in a little above or below this price point. If you have any questions about your options, we will be happy to answer these and any potential concerns during your initial consultation.

If you have any additional questions about dermal fillers, or if you wish to speak with Dr. Ebrahim to find out if these non-surgical cosmetic treatments may be right for you, please contact us today to schedule your consultation.
