What Are Dermal Fillers?
Comprised of substances found naturally in the body, temporary dermal fillers can be injected just below the skin’s surface to add volume, enhance facial contour, and produce a smoother, more youthful-looking appearance. At Afterglow Physician Directed Medical Aesthetics, our experienced family doctor, Shehla Ebrahim, MD, offers JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, and RADIESSE® to non-surgically improve the appearance of various facial aging concerns. Carefully administered in our office by Dr. Ebrahim, injectable treatments can often be completed in under an hour with little to no discomfort or downtime, and results are generally immediate and relatively long-lasting.

Dermal Fillers Vs. BOTOX® Cosmetic
While both dermal fillers and BOTOX Cosmetic can be used to soften the appearance of wrinkles, and both are types of cosmetic injectables, the way they achieve the intended effect is different. The mechanism behind BOTOX Cosmetic is reduction of muscle activity, while dermal fillers plump the treated area and add volume. In some cases one or the other injectable will better serve your needs. It may be that BOTOX Cosmetic maximizes your benefits in one area and a dermal filler provides the best result in another. We will discuss your goals and tailor a program to suit you.
How Long Does the Dermal Fillers Treatment Take?
Depending on the number of areas you wish to address, treatment typically takes about 30 minutes to an hour to complete. In fact, many people receive injectables fillers on their lunch break.
Are There Any Side Effects from Dermal Fillers?
Following treatment, some bruising and/or swelling may occur, but these side effects should dissipate shortly and normal activities can often be resumed immediately.
How Long Do Dermal Filler Results Last?
Results will generally appear instantaneously with treatment. Depending on the specific filler, as well as the particular area of concern, the effects of injectable treatments will often last anywhere from six months to a year.
Will I Need Additional Dermal Filler Treatments?
Occasional touch-up treatments (about every six to twelve months) will generally be necessary to maintain optimal results; however, this may vary on a case by case basis.
How Much Do Dermal Fillers Cost?
Each dermal filler brand is priced differently, and the cost of your treatment plan will depend on which fillers you use and how much is needed to achieve the desired outcome. We will review your customized program before beginning so that you are well-informed about the anticipated expense. Generally speaking, fillers typically cost around $700 per vial, with some formulas coming in a little above or below this price point. If you have any questions about your options, we will be happy to answer these and any potential concerns during your initial consultation.
Additional Frequently Asked Questions About Dermal Fillers
Do Dermal Filler Injections Hurt?
Discomfort during treatment is minimal to moderate, and some fillers – such as JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC – are formulated with a local anesthetic called lidocaine for enhanced comfort.
Are Dermal Fillers Safe?
When performed by a qualified professional, dermal filler injections can be a safe solution for addressing common signs of aging. Different injectables are indicated for specific facial areas and concerns. The associated risks and side effects will be discussed with you during your consultation to ensure you are familiar with your dermal filler treatment.
How Can I Make Dermal Fillers Last Longer?
Since dermal fillers are designed as a temporary solution, the formulas will gradually get absorbed by the body over time. The longevity of each will vary, and each patient may absorb the formula at a slightly different rate. To help prolong your filler injections for as long as possible, it can be helpful to minimize sun exposure, maintain a skin care regimen, and consume a diet of healthy foods. If you would like to maintain your dermal filler results long-term, you can return for routine re-treatments.
What Is the Best Age for Dermal Fillers?
Although men and women in their 40s and older tend to be the most common patients for dermal fillers, any adults showing signs of aging, such as wrinkles or volume loss, may be good candidates for filler injections. Those wanting to enhance their natural facial appearance with fuller cheeks or augmented lips may benefit from dermal fillers as early as their 20s or 30s.
